The Cuban String Project

Danny stands in front of Fusterlandia, a colorful mosaic folk art neighborhood in the small fishing town of Jaminaitas, about 20 miles east of Havana. Fusterlanda was created by a Cuban artist named José Fuster. Over a decade his creations grew whimsically around the neighborhood as his neighbors encouraged him to continue in/on their business and houses.

Most of the literary brigades were young professionals and students, some as young as 12. It has become the world’s most ambitious and organized literacy campaign. By its completion, 707,212 adults were taught to read and write, raising the national literacy rate to 96%.
